Slow slip events precursory to the 2014 Iquique Earthquake, revisited with long-base tilt and GPS records

چکیده

SUMMARY The M= 8.1, 1 April 2014 Iquique earthquake, which broke part of the northern Chile seismic gap, was preceded by a strong foreshock sequence starting early January 2014. reported analysis continuous records nearby GPS stations from Integrated Plate Observatory Chile, North array lead to contradictory results concerning existence and location slow slip events (SSEs) on interplate contact. Resolving this controversy is an important issue, as although many SSEs are in subduction zones, only few were found be precursory large earthquakes. Here we show that long base tiltmeter installed near Iquique, when corrected for coseismic steps, long-term drift, tidal signals oceanic atmospheric loading, significant residual signals. These can modelled with four located close Iquique. Their signature already some stations, but their source then characterized very low resolution time space, leading contradicting models. With tilt records, rule out previously proposed models single SSE closer main shock. Combining greatly improves alone, one could locate sources 100–180 km south–southeast shock epicentre, moment magnitudes between 5.8 6.2, at edge aftershock asperities. moderate thus did not directly trigger shock, contributed aftershock. Only sensitivity tiltmeter, added allowed us describe unprecedented accuracy process cascade cross-triggered, short-term aseismic earthquakes This three months activation appears final acceleration burst weaker, longer term started mid-2013, reported, release history quantify. From methodological point view, our study takes advantage interesting complementarity measurements, due different dependence distance strain, turns efficient resolving strain sources, even both instruments each other. It finally demonstrates removal sequences small or undetected steps high record signal order retrieve purely signal, presently impossible task noise.

Intense foreshocks and a slow slip event preceded the 2014 Iquique Mw 8.1 earthquake.

The subduction zone in northern Chile is a well-identified seismic gap that last ruptured in 1877. The moment magnitude (Mw) 8.1 Iquique earthquake of 1 April 2014 broke a highly coupled portion of this gap. To understand the seismicity preceding this event, we studied the location and mechanisms of the foreshocks and computed Global Positioning System (GPS) time series at stations located on s...

Earthquake and tsunami forecasts: relation of slow slip events to subsequent earthquake rupture.

The 5 September 2012 M(w) 7.6 earthquake on the Costa Rica subduction plate boundary followed a 62-y interseismic period. High-precision GPS recorded numerous slow slip events (SSEs) in the decade leading up to the earthquake, both up-dip and down-dip of seismic rupture. Deeper SSEs were larger than shallower ones and, if characteristic of the interseismic period, release most locking down-dip ...

Accelerated nucleation of the 2014 Iquique, Chile Mw 8.2 Earthquake

The earthquake nucleation process has been vigorously investigated based on geophysical observations, laboratory experiments, and theoretical studies; however, a general consensus has yet to be achieved. Here, we studied nucleation process for the 2014 Iquique, Chile Mw 8.2 megathrust earthquake located within the current North Chile seismic gap, by analyzing a long-term earthquake catalog cons...

Areas prone to slow slip events impede earthquake rupture propagation and promote afterslip

At subduction zones, transient aseismic slip occurs either as afterslip following a large earthquake or as episodic slow slip events during the interseismic period. Afterslip and slow slip events are usually considered as distinct processes occurring on separate fault areas governed by different frictional properties. Continuous GPS (Global Positioning System) measurements following the 2016 Mw...
